This is what I call "Fictional Science" as the term science fiction unfortunately includes vampires, zombies, unicorns, magicians, war stories in the future, etc, etc, in other words, lots of stuff that has nothing to do with science, they either magical or simply happening in the future. I guess "hard science fiction" others would call it. I like stories about science innovation or the impact of new science technology or of new scientific developments and how they would impact humans. In that sense, stories of first contact are great ground for that. This book excels at that, the protagonist meets a new species of aliens and the book explores all the issues that come up from that...from how to communicate (the aliens don't speak with voice, they do it with color!) to what happens to the cultures when they meet. The logic in the book is not perfect, it's a bit simplistic at times (to give you one example, in four years, even though the aliens aren't technologically advanced, the only thing that occur to the human to improve her standing in the new community is a slightly better plow...though she needed to gain their support, it never occur to her to show them how to do anything else). Also refreshing is the fact that humans aren't these "greedy corporations seeking to suck the resources out of the aliens", they act in a rational, mature way, that I think is more representative of what we would really do, I'd like to think we have learned something since the Spanish Conquistadores. That said, humans aren't perfect either and screw up and fix their mistakes. Very original in the problems it posses and how it solves them. Also explores what happens when people don't understand each other, and better yet, when they do understand each other, but simply don't agree. It deserves the 5 stars in originality alone even though the main character can be a bit annoying at times, it oscillates between this serious scientist and a lost little girl...some times a bit too much of the later. But if you love fictional science stories, if Asimov or Arthur C Clark are some of your favorite authors, then you will like this book.

I like good sci fi. Not the shoot em up aliens are invading kind of sci fi, But the kind that introduces technology and cultures that don't exist. This one does that incredibly well. It really opened my eyes to cultural diversity, and reinforced my thoughts on balance of nature as well. This story could be read as an extraordinary adventure alone but its much more. I'd put Amy Thomson up with Tolkien and Heinlein.My sadness is that I could only find four books written by this very talented writer.
Normally, alien contact stories deal with aliens that are much more advanced, or much less advanced. In a certain sense of consideration, the Tendu are both.
While the author is advancing and has a certain political sensibility, this does not detract from the story in any meaningful way.
Overall, the interactions between the races - at least Juna and the Tendu - are fairly interesting. The others humans, as portrayed, are a bit too shallow and stereotypical to be truly interesting, and the story probably been better off without the last pages that describe the politics and maneuvering that accompany alien contact.
There are several interesting ideas that are left undeveloped, but that's not a bad thing. They would have distracted from the main focus of the story.
Overall, the book is well worth reading, with the caveat that it is very obviously leftist and pro-environmental. A modern version of _The sheep look up_ in a sense. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but worth noting.
It will be interesting to see how the book ages, as the political sensibilities that shaped it change. Check back in a dozen or two years.
Great science-fiction story. It will hook you up after the first few pages and you will find yourself having trouble to put down this novel. It gave me some serious sleep deprivation, but I enjoyed every single page of it. This is a perfectly balanced and well-crafted narrative. The writing style is smooth, fluid, and very vivid making the reading experience very enjoyable. The story...wow....this is my first time reading this type of science-fiction. I basically like hard-core science-fiction with a lot of weight on the science and an acceptable percent of space-opera. However, this book blew me away...literally (at least my mind). This novel really made a dent deep in my consciousness. Just the other day I was walking in the park across the street with my daughter. All of a sudden she jumped back as a frog leapt into the grass. Then, out of the blue I told her "Watch out...that is a Tinka. He is very young and he doesn't know what he is doing". She looked at me with a puzzled expression across her face and asked me the obvious question "What is a Tinka?"...I explained to her the whole nine-yards of it. I don't think she understood most of it though.

I can really say that it might be irrational, but after this book I have developed some sort of special respect for amphibians. There is one special detail to this story It has very little violence. It is mostly a "documentary" of the clash of two civilizations thousands of light-years apart (it is based on a real story...it just hasn't happened yet). Very, very interesting read. I strongly recommend this book.

Of course, I also read the sequel. It is juts the continuation of the same book. I am seriously looking forward the third book, but so far there are no indications that it will happen.
