I read this book as a kid (several times) and it affected me deeply. The writing is so simple, yet the message is so grave, it really sneaks up on you. Today, as I see ever more reports of humanity hurtling towards its own destruction, I realise this book is as prophetic as it is profound. Highly recommended reading, for more reasons than usual.
This book is a real downer, but it is so well written and well illustrated, and makes such an important point, that I still recommend it highly.

"Play Little Victims" is presented in the format of a children's storybook, but as indicated by the title, the subject matter is grim.

When I first started reading this book, I was expecting a story about mice being victimized by a cat, or something similar, but the actual story is nothing of the sort.

"Play Little Victims" is an allegory. Mice who survive the apocalypse evolve a civilization that mirrors our own. The mice face the same problems we face, violence, need, depletion of resources, and overpopulation. The mice leaders' attempts to solve their social problems provide bitter satire of both politics and religion, culminating in a dystopia which will be familiar to anyone who has read Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal"
Subtle, true, but not funny. The insight is slightly frightening, one of Cook's other gifts besides a dr black humour
